Sensitivity To Cold

Following are time tested tips for dealing with sensitivity to cold caused by chemotherapy. If you have additional tips, please share them by e mailing Survivorship A to Z.
While the sensitivity continues:
FOOD AND DRINK
- DO NOT
- Eat ice chips
- Drink anything cold.
- Eat anything cold including ice cream
- INSTEAD:
- Store beverages at room temperature
- If beverages or food are cold, allow them to become to be room temperature or heat heat them prior to consuming.
- If you really hunger for a food that is normally served cold such as ice cream, let it melt before consuming.
YOUR BODY:
- Always wear socks (even to bed in case you have to get up to use the bathroom) to avoid cold tile/vinyl floors.
- Do not put ice or ice packs on your body.
IN THE HOUSE
- Keep a pair of gloves near the refrigerator so you can get what you need without touching items in the refrigerator or freezer.
- Do not run the air conditioner on high
- Keep the residence warm during the winter
OUTDOORS
- In cold temperatures:
- Bundle up leaving as little skin exposed to the elements as possible.
- Wear scarves to cover your nose and mouth to minimize exposure to cold air.
- Wear gloves
- Avoid touching metal hand railings or other cold objects.
- Do not swim in cold water.
- Avoid breathing deeply in cold air. Consider wearing a scarf over your nose and mouth that you can breath through.
