Why Do The Interview In Person?
1/1
When you apply for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, you will be asked to interview with a Social Security Representative. You can do the interview face-to-face (in person) or on the telephone.
An in person interview is preferable because:
- It is generally helpful to work with someone face to face. You are likely to get more attention, and the chances for error are reduced.
- If forms or documents are missing, you will know immediately what you need to correct the situation. Also, if there are minor errors such as a missing date or a ZIP code for a doctor, you will be able to correct it on the spot without the form having to go back and forth through the mail.
- You have a personal contact to call and ask questions.
- You will be able to get a written receipt for everything you submit.
- You will be able to keep the original documents you take to Social Security once the representative has photocopied them.
- The representative gets an opportunity to get a feel for your honesty.
Some attorneys believe it is better to engage in the interview on the telephone instead of in person on the basis that part of the Social Security form asks the representative to state his or her observations. It is felt that if you look too healthy, that will be noted as a negative in your record. However, according to a disability expert with more than 20 years experience in Social Security, no claim was ever denied because of a Social Security representative's thoughts about how a claimant looked.
