When To Tell About Your Health Condition And/Or Treatment

1/1

When to tell people about your health condition is up to you. There is no right or wrong.

There are a few guidelines that may help:

  • Underage children should be told as soon as possible. They will know that something is "wrong" and are likely to blame themselves if they don't know the reason. For information about telling underage children, including language to use, click here
  • It is also advisable to tell your spouse or significant other immediately. As you are aware, trust is the bedrock of a solid relationship. He or she can also help you through an emotional roller coaster.
  • People cannot help unless they are aware of your situation and needs.
  • There are certain people who you may want to hear the news directly from you - or from another particular person. Telling them sooner rather than later helps avoid their learning the news from some one else.
  • When (and who) to tell in a work setting depends on the work enviornment. For information, click here
  • Posting on an internet site may alert people about your condition before you would like them to know.
