Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits are paid in arrears -- which means that checks will come at the end of the month for the month before. For example, Your check for being disabled during January will come in the early part of February.

Payment Date

The date of social security payments differs for people who START receiving benefits after June 1, 2000, and those who were already receiving benefits on that date. 

Everyone who was receiving SSDI as of June 1, 2000 will continue to receive their monthly payment from Social Security at the same time as in the past.

Everyone who starts receiving benefits June 1, 2000 or later, who does not also receive SSI, and who is not receiving SSDI benefits as a spouse or child, will receive a check each month on a day determined by your (the recipient's) birthday:

1st - 10th

Second Wednesday of Each Month

11th - 20th

Third Wednesday of Each Month

21st - 31st

Fourth Wednesday of Each Month

Everyone who receives both SSI and SSDI will receive their SSDI payments on the third day of the month regardless of their birthday.   

Everyone who receives SSDI benefits as a spouse or child

Will receive checks based on the birth date of the worker to whose benefits they are attached, not their own birth date.  For example, if you collect benefits as the ex-spouse of your husband, your divorced husband's birthday is the 5th of February and yours in on May 22nd,  your check will be determined by his birthday and will come on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.
