Statistics

1/1

People with a life-changing condition often encounter statistics which seem to indicate what will happen to them. However, statistics do not indicate what will happen to any individual.

When it comes to medical situations:

  • Statistics are about what happens to a large number of people. By definition, they are not about any particular individual.
  • Statistics are about what happened in the past. The past does not take into account medical advances to date, or what will happen tomorrow, or the day after.
  • Statistics include:
    • People who do not have access to the health care system
    • People who were already in poor health when they were diagnosed
    • People who smoke
    • People who have another disease
    • People who are not motivated to help themselves.
  •  Statistics include people who do not know how to maximize the health care system for their benefit (which you can learn on this website).
Statistics in the medical setting should be used to help with financial and other planning. As stated, statistics do not indicate what will happen to any particular individual. On the other side, there is always at least one person that survives every disease. There is no reason that person cannot be you.
