The younger the age, the more limited the child's understanding is. 

Maintain physical touch and routines. 

Talk.

  • Answer questions truthfully.
  • Be prepared to answer questions over and over again.
  • Keep discussions short.  Children of this age can only focus for brief periods.

Include the child in family rituals. Perhaps create new rituals.

Play with the child. For instance, play games together. Draw together. Read, dance, act, do sports, garden.

Offer physical outlets for energy (and emotions)

Look for confused thinking.
