The federal and state governments provide the following benefits:
- Health insurance through Medicare, Medicaid and through the Veterans Administration.
- Income for qualified wage earners and dependents who become disabled.
- Disability income safety nets in some circumstances through Supplemental Security Income.
- A food stamp program.
- Assistance with returning to work.
- Federal employees' benefits.
- Benefits for disabled children, spouses and ex-spouses as well as survivors.
You do not need to be totally unable to work to qualify for disability benefits. The definition of "disability" depends on the program.
If you can qualify for benefits based on disability, it is never too early to start laying the groundwork in case you become disabled in the future.
If you are applying for a disability benefit, learn how to maximize your chances of obtaining the benefit, as well as what to do when you receive benefits so they will not be cut off.
When on disability, an understanding of how to transition back to work and what happens to your benefits is advisable.
