After you receive SSDI for two years, you also receive Medicare. In general, Medicare is a federal program providing health insurance coverage to seniors and to people with a disability.
Enrollment in Medicare is automatic on the earlier of:
- Being on SSDI for 24 months or
- Reaching age 65
If you're on disability when you reach Full Retirement Age, your disability benefits automatically become retirement benefits. Rules relating to retirement benefits take over, including your right to Medicare. It's no longer relevant whether or not you are "disabled" as defined for purposes of SSDI.
