A leg cramp is a painful tightening of the muscles in the leg.
- A leg cramp generally comes on suddenly in a leg or foot.
- A leg cramp feels like a tight or stiff feeling.
- There is often difficulty moving the foot or leg.
Leg cramps can be caused by being in bed for long periods of time. They can also be caused by a chemical imbalance.
To avoid leg cramps:
- Stretch the tight muscle as much as you comfortably can.
- Change position often.
- Exercise legs in bed. For example, bend and straighten legs 10 times at least twice a day. If you cannot move your legs, ask someone to move them for you.
- A bed cradle that holds sheets and blankets off of your feet can help avoid leg cramps if you are bed bound.
- Keep warm.
- Speak with your doctor about muscle relaxants, heat, massage and a possible chemical imbalance.
